Joyful Holiday Traditions to Start in a Continuing Care Retirement Community

The holiday season centers on food, family and, of course, football. For residents of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) and other senior living communities, familiar holiday traditions often change after a move. While transitions can be challenging, they also open the door to fresh rituals and enjoyable ways to celebrate year after year.

Below are practical and creative approaches CCRCs and retirement communities use to help residents maintain meaningful holiday experiences while embracing new possibilities.

A new spin on holiday gatherings

Residences in CCRCs typically offer smaller kitchens and living spaces than many people had in their previous homes, which can make hosting a large holiday dinner difficult. However, a reduced footprint need not limit festive gatherings.

Many communities provide multipurpose rooms or banquet spaces that residents can reserve for private events. These shared spaces allow longtime hosts to continue entertaining family and friends without the constraints of an apartment-sized dining area.

For some residents, handing off the host responsibilities can be a welcome relief. Moving into a CCRC provides an excellent opportunity to let another family member take the lead while still contributing where desired—helping with preparation, sharing recipes, or assisting with cleanup.

Other practical options include potluck-style meals to distribute cooking tasks, ordering holiday takeout from grocery stores, restaurants, or the community’s dining services, or dining out to avoid both preparation and cleanup. These choices preserve togetherness while simplifying the logistics of holiday entertaining.

Dining services’ opportunity to shine

Holidays are a perfect time for senior living dining teams to showcase their culinary skills. Many CCRCs create special seasonal menus, celebratory buffets and themed events that highlight favorite flavors and festive presentations.

One beloved tradition at some communities is a Thanksgiving leftovers event. Chefs craft creative menus the day after Thanksgiving featuring turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and other favorites so residents can enjoy those flavors a little longer.

Another popular option is a holiday heirloom recipe event. Communities invite residents to share treasured family recipes, and the culinary team recreates those dishes for a tasting or special meal. Often the resident who contributed the recipe shares the story behind it—how the dish became a family favorite—adding personal history and warmth to the dining experience.

Other festive on- and off-campus activities

Communities typically decorate common areas and plan a wide variety of seasonal activities to celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year’s and other holidays. These events help foster camaraderie and create new memories.

Common activities include tree-trimming parties, gingerbread or cookie decorating, themed tea or hot cocoa afternoons, and music or caroling events. Many communities also organize volunteer opportunities—such as food drives, toy collections, or partnerships with local charities—to connect residents with the wider community during the season.

Holiday bazaars and craft fairs are another frequent offering. These events bring local vendors onto campus, create shopping opportunities for residents and guests, and often serve as social highlights that welcome families and neighbors.

Making new holiday traditions while honoring fond memories

Moving to a retirement community doesn’t mean giving up the holiday spirit. It may require reimagining long-established practices, but it also allows residents to discover new traditions, enjoy shared celebrations and keep meaningful memories alive. With thoughtful planning and community support, holidays in CCRCs can be just as joyful, warm and memorable as ever.
